Hello kak vero. How are u today? I hope you are okay. Kak vero , i want to ask you about Are there any deficiencies in speech act theory by JL. Searle? I hope you answer my question^^. Thankyou so much , and have a nice day:)
BalasHapusHi Jesica, thank you for your comment in my blog. In my perspective Speech Act Theory is concerned with the ways in which language can be used. It originated with Austin, but was developed by Searle. JL. Serale discuss about discourse analysis whereas, conversational analysis is not.
HapusHello Vero! I think you didn't understand the question from Jessica. She want to ask you about the deficiencies/weaknesses of Speech Act Theory by Searle. Your answer is not related to the question.
HapusHi Jessica! I would like to answer your question.
HapusSome weaknesses of speech acts theories:
1. It explained just about the theory without giving more examples on specific language.
2. the readers could not understood which language that he want to explain the speech act theories. As do we know that every language and every culture has own characteristic.
3. he gave too much explanation only on the hypothesis of speech act that he assumes. 4. he did not make many quotes or opinions from another researcher.
Hi Jes, i will add my answer Searle contends that because speaking a language is performing acts according to rules, then “The semiotic structure of a language may be regarded as a conventional realization of a series of underlying constitutive rules. Part of the weaknesses of Searle’s theory is that the concepts of “intention” and “convention” are loosely used. I hold the view that participants sometimes interpret communicative acts beyond their intended or con- ventional meanings. I am sure Searle aligns with my stance that in discourse, there are utterances that H cannot respond to, because the intention of S is either doubtful or not known. Consider the sentences below:
Hapus(i) There are no dogs in this house; it is open to all;
(ii) This is a friendly graveyard, so urinate here.
Through world knowledge, the decoder of the above sentences infers that the encoders of the utterances have bad intentions, but this interpretation may not be correct. Nevertheless, it is the duty of the encoder to convince the decoder that the utterances are not evil-intended. At times, communicative acts (verbal and non-verbal elements) have to be processed by the encoder so that the inferential process can be facilitated. Thus, conventional meanings of words that constitute utterances are not the basis for decoding illocutionary forces and perlocutionary acts. The loose use of the term “conventionality” remains part of the weaknesses of Searle’s speech act theory. Unconventional use of verbal and non-verbal elements of communication appears conventional as a result of the contextual nuances which inform their use.
Hello veronica,,In speech theory there are many mistyped
HapusFor example ,
"speach" there's no meaning this word in english vocab eventhough in java vocab there's no that word.
OK thank you
What do u mean dude? Could u explain what are u question proprerly?

BalasHapusHi yola, yah its already long time ago. But just get the permission fom Mr. Budi to publish in my blog. What's up Yola?
Hapusagain and again. you didn't understand the question on your blog Vero. Before you answer the question. You should make sure that you understand well about it. or you can ask Yola about the meaning of her question.
HapusHi dude, are you okay? Are you in your periode at this moment sikin? You like want to eat all people in this world i think.
HapusHi Yola, thank you fo the question. Yes of course i feel so exited to discuss about speech act. Because Language plays an important role in human life, namely as a communication tool to interact and achieve cooperation between people. Language has an intrinsic function in the framework of human relations. Without the presence of language, humans will not be interconnected with one another. Collaboration between humans cannot be carried out optimally if language is not present as an intermediary for communication and interaction. One of the functions of language according to Halliday (1970, 1973) in Leech (2011: 86) is personal function, language functions as the expression of the speaker's attitude and as an influence on the attitudes of speech behavior. Speech act is the ongoing linguistic interaction in a form of utterance which includes the expression of psychological situations and social actions such as influencing people's behavior or making an agreement involving two parties namely the speaker and the partner of the speaker. Speaking activities are not only limited to speaking, but also doing something based on the speech
HapusHi sikin, have you read my answer for Yola? Sikin you can comment in another blog, but dont judge all people like you are the most clever in this world. Hahahah
HapusHell veronica,.
HapusIn speech theory there are many mistyped
For example ,
in the same sentence with others , there are mistyped also " actoin" should be "action"
Please, when you are right !!!!
According on your PPT. Can you give the example about the 5 point illocutionary?
BalasHapusThank you
Hi Yusuf! I would like to answer your question.
HapusSearle (1975) set up the following classification of illocutionary speech acts:
1. assertives = speech acts that commit a speaker to the truth of the expressed proposition
examples of assertive sentence:
In English language, this sentence gives information about fact, opinion and belief. This sentence is used most commonly in books, informative articles, reports as well as in essays.
a. She likes writing on sounds of birds.
b. She doesn’t like crowd places.
c. Her brother copies sounds of animals.
d. It was raining.
I refer you a the reference https://thebestuknow.com/english-grammar/sentence/assertive-sentence/
2. directives = speech acts that are to cause the hearer to take a particular action, e.g. requests, commands and advice
examples:
a. Do you think you could lend me some money?
b. You should go to Campus.
3. commissives = speech acts that commit a speaker to some future action, e.g. promises and oaths
example: I promise to stop yelling.
4. expressives = speech acts that express on the speaker's attitudes and emotions towards the proposition, e.g. congratulations, excuses and thanks
examples:
a. Congratulations for being the first winner in the class
b. Thank you for having me.
5. declarations = speech acts that change the reality in accord with the proposition of the declaration, e.g. baptisms, pronouncing someone guilty or pronouncing someone husband and wife
example: I knew that you are a thief.
Hi Yusuf, can you differenciate what is the differences between video and PPT. That is not PPT yusuf. That is video.. Are you sure open it alread, dude. Hahhaha
HapusHi Yusuf, thank you for your question. This is my answer. 1. Representatives.
HapusThe point or purpose of the members of the representative class is to commit the speaker (in varying degrees) to something's being the case, to the truth of the expressed proposition. All of the members of the representative class are assessable on the dimension of assessment which includes true and false.
2. Directives. The illocutionarypoint of these consists in the fact that they are attempts (of varying degrees, and hence, more precisely, they are determinates of the determinablewhich includes attempting)by the speakerto get the hearer to do something. They may be very modest 'attempts'as when I invite you to do it or suggest that you do it, or they may be very fierce attempts as when I insist that you do it.
3. CommissivesA.ustin'sdefinitionofcommissivesseemstomeunexceptionable, and I will simply appropriateit as it stands with the cavil that severalof the verbs he lists as commissive verbs do not belong in this class at all, such as 'shall', 'intend', 'favor', and others. Commissives then are those illocutionary acts whose point is to commit the speaker(again in varying degrees) to some future course of action.
4. ExpressivesT.heillocutionarypointofthisclassistoexpressthepsychological state specified in the sincerity condition about a state of affairsspecified in the propositionalcontent. The paradigmsof Expressiveverbs are 'thank','congratu- late', 'apologize','condole', 'deplore',and 'welcome'.Notice that in expressives there is no directionof fit. In performingan expressive, the speakeris neither trying to get the world to match the words nor the words to match the world, ratherthe truth of the expressedpropositionis presupposed. Thus, for example, when I apologize for having stepped on your toe, it is not my purpose either to claim that your toe was stepped on or to get it stepped on. This fact is neatly reflected in the syntax (of English) by the fact that the paradigm-expressive verbs in their performativeoccurrencewill not take that clauses but require a gerundive nominalizationtransformation(or some other nominal). One cannot say:
*I apologize that I stepped on your toe; ratherthe correct English is.
5. Declarations. It is the defining characteristicof this class that the successful performanceof one of its members brings about the correspondencebetween the propositionalcontent and reality, successful performanceguaranteesthat the propositionalcontent correspondsto the world: if I successfully perform the act of appointingyou chairman, then you are chairman;if I successfully perform the act of nominatingyou as candidate, then you are a candidate;if I successfully performthe act of declaringa state of war, then war is on; if I successfully performthe act of marryingyou, then you are married
Hi sikin. Thank you for the answer. Could yu please explain, by simple words, I mean by your own word? Not only copas from internet? Wkwkwksk
HapusHello Vero! according to Searle, he sees language itself against the background of those neurobiological and psychological capacities of human beings which underpin our competences as language-using organisms while still conceiving language as central to philosophical concerns. can you explain to me about that?
BalasHapusVero, you know what, I really love your blog about this topic. it looks interesting because the colors of your theme are soft. you also add a video with your own voice to explain the topic. Hopefully you can make it many interesting blog for the next topic on your blog.
BalasHapusOh sure. I will make it better for the next topic i will share. But, why suddenly you talk softly, coz usually you are very rude. Lol
HapusThe critiques for you:
BalasHapus1. you just explain a short explanation.
2. there is no reference.
3. you just explain a general thing.
4. you didn't state many explanation from experts.
Thank you for your critic sikin, but have you watch another video in youtube before? Generally its seldom all people make the references in the video. Usually they will the references in a paper or PPT.
HapusI want to give suggestions. it will be more interesting if you can make a video which is explained by yourself. It will be better if you highlights the important things on the video. I hope you will make a good video and share with us on your blog. thank you.
BalasHapusHi sikin, what do you mean? Did you see? That is by my self of course. And i have already highlight in my PPT about the topic by write with big Font in when I explain something. Are you really see that, or only open in it for 1 second?
Hapushello vero, your blog is very good, and you make assignments different from others, you make animated videos, it's very interesting ...
BalasHapusHi evaaa.. Ow wow.. Thank you eva.. I suggeest you, you can make like mine. And if you need help to make it, i can help to tell you how to make it eva.
Hapus
BalasHapusHi vero. I saw from your video about 5 points of illocutionary. One of them is Assertive. What is the meaning of "how are in the world" in the definition of Assertive?
Hi fransiska. Thabk you for your question. I will answer your question.
HapusRepresentative Speech Actions.
Representative is a speech act that binds the speaker of the truth of what is being said. The appropriateness of the relationship between words or speech with worldly facts lies with the speaker. Included in this type of representative speech act, include: assertions, conclusions, and descriptions. Examples of representative speech acts are as follows. "The population of this village is 1350 people."
And for the sentences about "how are in this world" this is question or what? Because there is no question word behind the sentence.
HapusAnd i really suggest you, please dont make people confused, if you want to ask, please concern to the mark. Ok.
Hapushello vero, I will give a question to you, Pragmatics has a close relationship with syntax and semantic. Explain the relationship and give an example of the analysis that distinguishes the three ...?
BalasHapusPragmatics is the study of contextual meaning. What is the purpose of the statement and give an example!
BalasHapusHi eva, i will answer your question. Pragmatics is a subfield of linguistics and semiotics that studies the ways in which context contributes to meaning. Pragmatics encompasses speech act theory, conversational implicature, talk in interaction and other approaches to language behavior in philosophy, sociology, linguistics and anthropology.
