Hi guys, It's me Vero. How are you doing guys? Hopefully you alright. In this chance, I would like to share about Pragmatics.Do you know what is pragmatics? Have you heard about that before?Ok, let's study...
DEFINITION OF PRAGMATICS:
Globally Pragmatics is the branch of linguistics concerned with meaning in context, or the meanings of sentences in terms of the speaker's intention in using them.
According to expert Pragmatics definition of Pragmatics is:
EXAMPLE OF PRAGMATICS:
1. " Only for you that have a mouth, please read the text in the whiteboard".The sentences mean to guide all the student in the class to read the text in the whiteboard. Because no body in this world that do not have a mouth, therefore the speaker said only for you all that have a mouth, that mean the speaker wants all the people in the class do that.
2. " If you do not publish your journal, you still can join with my class in the next semester".What the meaning of that sentence? That's mean so the student need to give more effort to do their homework, so they can publish their journal. So they can pass the subject, because if they not publish the journal, they will not pass that subject and they must repeat again for that subject in the next semester with the same lecturer.
THE CORRELATION WITH MR. BUDI'S LESSON:
What is the correlation with Mr. Budi said in the class is. I got so many knowledge from him. Pragmatics is the study of language, and also meaning, and the context in the word or sentences from speaker to motivate the listener to do something. Same thing with semantics, only the difference is that pragmatics uses logic more and bit straight, while semantics uses finer words and more using heart.
CONCLUSION:
In conclusion simply put, pragmatics is study language that is not directly spoken. Instead, the speaker hints at or suggests a meaning, and the listener assumes the correct intention.

DEFINITION OF PRAGMATICS:
Globally Pragmatics is the branch of linguistics concerned with meaning in context, or the meanings of sentences in terms of the speaker's intention in using them.
According to expert Pragmatics definition of Pragmatics is:
- Hence (1993: 42) definition of pragmatics is the study of the condition of human language uses as these are determined bu the context of society.
- Leech ( 1983: 6) states that pragmatics is the study of meaning in relation to speech situation.
- Levinson (1983: 5) definition that pragmatics is the study of language use, that is study of relation between language and context which is basic to an account of language understanding which involves the making of inferences which will connect what is said to what mutually assumed or what has been said before. Pragmatic can also solve the problem between the speaker and hearer, especially the problem about point view. Leech (1983: 36) states that pragmatics involves problem both from the speaker's point view and from the hearer's point view. The problem of speaker's point of view is how to produce an utterance which will make the result.
- Yule (1996: 3) states that pragmatics is the study of speaker meaning.
EXAMPLE OF PRAGMATICS:
1. " Only for you that have a mouth, please read the text in the whiteboard".The sentences mean to guide all the student in the class to read the text in the whiteboard. Ok, that's all from me guys. Thank for reading. And your comment is high respected and helpful.

Hello Vero. I've read your blog about pragmatics. I just want to know, How do we know the meaning of the words or the sentences that are pragmatic? How do we differentiate the words or sentences of pragmatic meaning and the words or sentences that aren't pragmatics? Actually, I've asked about this to Yola. But, I want to know your opinion. Thanks.
BalasHapusHi sikin, thank you for your comment. Actually I have discuss about that in conclusion part. Pragmatics is study language that is not directly spoken. Instead, the speaker hints at or suggests a meaning, and the listener assumes the correct intention. So, that is mean we speak to someone by a purpose to do something, but we do not speak to the listener spesifically what we want to say, only guide them to do something by said something that content of hidden meaning in the sentences.
HapusThanks for the answer. But, I have the other questions. You said that pragmatic means speaking to someone by a purpose to do something, but we do not speak to the listener spesifically what we want to say, only guide them to do something by said something that content of hidden meaning in the sentences. Now, the questions are, how we could make the sentence of pragmatics meaning? Is there any term of word to make the sentence to be a pragmatics meaning? Thank you.
HapusThank you again for the question sist sikin, pragmatic is the way how to say something so our words can motivate them to do something. But we do not say what we want to say, but we say another words, that can make they think to do something.
HapusAre you sure about that? I think that your explanation is not well argued. Because my questions are how we could make the sentence of pragmatics meaning? And is there any term of word to make the sentence to be a pragmatics meaning? Thank you.

HapusPragmatics focuses not on what people say but how they say it and how others interpret their utterances in social contexts, says Geoffrey Finch in "Linguistic Terms and Concepts." Utterances are literally the units of sound you make when you talk, but the signs that accompany those utterances give the sounds their true meaning.
HapusPragmatics
Pragmatic means practical or logical. If someone calls you pragmatic, they mean that you tend to think in terms of the practical or logical rather than the ideal situation.
The term pragmatics is used in contrast to semantics. Semantics has to do with the actual definition of a word or text. Pragmatics refers to how words are used in a practical sense. Words can mean different things, and often the same word can mean something different depending on the context in which it is used. Words can also carry symbolic meaning and in practice, or practical situations, we will apply our understanding of symbols as we read or listen to others.
A pragmatic view means that one doesn't think in ideal or abstract terms. For example, words that attempt to explain abstract concepts-freedom, beauty-have no meaning in and of themselves. Instead, someone who looks at pragmatics would attempt to understand how they are being used in a given, concrete, practical situation. In other words, they look at how we apply these words in practical, everyday language.

I will open the links later. but, I want to know what is your understanding when you read the blog on the links? do you find any term of word to make the sentence to be a pragmatics meaning?

BalasHapusNice blog veroo... Keep enlightened ur friends. Ok
BalasHapusHehehee.. Praise God.. Thank you sir... That is because of you..
Hapushello vero ... is there the easiest technique in distinguishing a sentence, whether the sentence is semantics or pragmatics for example.
BalasHapusHi mesin, thank you for your nice answer. But like I was tell to you in my blog above, is pragmatics is the way how to motivate someone to do something but bit stright, but semantic more using heart with finer words.
HapusHello Mesin! Allowing me to help you answer Mesin's question, Vero. Actually, this question, I've ready gotten on my blog and I've already answered on Yola's blog. So, it makes me easy to answer your question. The easy way to distinguish the sentences both the pragmatic and semantic meaning is you should know the meaning of both of them.
BalasHapusBoth the pragmatic and semantic meaning of your sentence are important when communicating with other people. Although semantics is concerned only with the exact, literal meaning of the words and their interrelations, pragmatic usage focuses on the inferred meaning that the speakers and listeners perceive.
The following examples demonstrate the difference between the two:
She hasn’t taken a shower.
He was so tired he could sleep for days.
In both of these examples, the context and pragmatic meaning really define the sentence.
In the first, did the speaker really mean to say that the woman has not ever taken a shower, not even once? Although the sentence says just that, the listener in the conversation may understand, based on other factors, that the speaker means that the woman they are referring to has not taken a shower … today.
In the second example, we have a guy who is so tired he can sleep for days. Is he really going to sleep for days? Semantically, we would need to take that sentence to mean exactly that. But, in casual conversation or pragmatics, the listeners and speaker might tell you that the guy was just saying he was really, really tired, and using those words to convey that meaning, instead of saying, ‘he was really tired.
Thank you for the answer sikin. The point that we have to highlight is pragmatic is the words that can make someone to do what we want they do, without say directly but we talk in other word (yah might be bit stright) so they do what we want they do.
HapusYou're welcome Vero. But, I think your answer is not well argued. You have not stated any information by any researcher. It is more like by your own opinion. I think you should add opinion from researcher to make your answer more well argued.
HapusActually this is not my opnion, but that i what i can get from what our professor said lol 🐵🐶
Hapusoh I see, can you explain the name of the experts and the resources of your answer. without both of them, your answer is not well argued. people will think that answer is from your own opinion. thanks.
HapusGood Afternoon Kak Ve...
BalasHapuscan you describe to me in detail about the speech act, from the pragmatics perspective?
Hallo maya, thank you for your question, speech act is subfield of pragmatics that studies how words are used not only to present information but also to carry out action.
HapusHello Maya, I would like to give another answer. Allowing me to help you answer the question from Maya, Vero. As we do read in this blog, vero's stated that pragmatics is the branch of linguistics concerned with meaning in context, or the meanings of sentences in terms of the speaker's intention in using them. In addition, Leech ( 1983: 6) states that pragmatics is the study of meaning in relation to speech situation. We relate these meanings of pragmatics with the meanings of speech acts. speech act is subfield of pragmatics that studies how words are used not only to present information but also to carry out action. So, it means that speech acts from pragmatics perspective is one of the subfields of pragmatics that study about how words are used not only to present information but also to carry out action.
Hapushi vero, thanks for sharing the knowledge, its very useful and easily to comprehend 🙂
BalasHapusAccording to your statement, you said that it is very useful and easily to comprehend. Could you share to us about the topic according to your understanding? I would like to know it. Thank you.
HapusHi sandra, thank you. So, do you have any question about this?
BalasHapusHello kak vero, it's nice to visit your blog today. BalasHapusHay kak ve...
BalasHapusYour blog very nice. I like it,..
In your blog according expert Yule (1996: 3) states that pragmatics is the study of speaker meaning..
Can you explain what the means it?
And try give one example. Thanks
Hello Siti, please allow me to answer your question for Vero. Actually, Vero has already explained in this blog about that. Yule (1996: 3) states that pragmatics is the study of speaker meaning.
HapusSo, based on the opinion from the expert above, we can conclude that, pragmatics not only study about the language, but also about hidden meaning of the speaker what the speaker want to say to listener while dealing with different situation to motivate the listener to do something for a purpose. Thank you.
Thanks ..
HapusCan you give me example.
Hi sikin, thank you for ur answer. But why didn't give the example either lol..
HapusHi Siti, yes, actually i was explained the meaning by expert yule in my blog.
HapusBut its alright, i will explain again and give you an example, here you are.
Pragmatics is the study of the aspects of meaning and language use
that are dependent on the speaker, the addressee and other features of the
context of utterance. In other words, Pragmatics is concerned with the study
of meaning as communicated by a speaker and interpreted by a listener
(Yule, 1996:3). Pragmatics is the study of „speaker meaning‟, or how we
recognize what is mean even when it is not actually said (or written). Yule
states that the physical environment, or context, is perhaps more easily
recognized as having a powerful impact on how referring expression are to
be interpreted (Yule, 1996:21).
Example :
I found an old bike. The chain was rusted and the tyres flat.
It would be pragmaatically odd to say :
" I found an old bike. A bike has a chain. The chain was rusted. A bike also has tyres. The tyres were flat.
hi Siti and Vero! I will give you more than one example.
HapusExamples of Pragmatics:
1. Will you crack open the door? I am getting hot.
Semantically, the word "crack" would mean to break, but pragmatically we know that the speaker means to open the door just a little to let in some air.
2. I heart you!
Semantically, "heart" refers to an organ in our body that pumps blood and keeps us alive. However, pragmatically, "heart" in this sentence means "love"-hearts are commonly used as a symbol for love, and to "heart" someone has come to mean that you love someone.
3. If you eat all of that food, it will make you bigger!
Semantically, "bigger" in this sentence would mean larger than you are currently. Think about how this sentence, pragmatically, would mean something different depending on the context. If it is said to a young child, pragmatically, it would mean to grow bigger. If it is said to a grown person who is already obese, it would mean something entirely different.
Hi sist, thank you for ur answer. But how about you give us the example by your own words?
HapusHi Vero! I'll give you two examples. the fist example is using Bahasa. the second example is using English.
Hapus1. Kembang Desa
semantically, this phrase means that flower in a village. but, pragmatically, this phrase means the most beautiful woman in village.
2. You are very hot.
semantically, this sentence means that your body is hot. but, pragmatically, this sentence means that you are so sexy.
Thank you.
kak kak sikin dan kak vero/...
Hapusyour answer is very satisfying ...
the more it makes me know about real pragmatics ...
and I want to give one example to you a little,
"bu, nasi kuning 2"
the sentence above might have a unclear meaning, especially in the two-word part (are there two packages, or two plastic bags)?
however, in pragmatics the sentence above actually has a clear meaning and where the meaning of the sentence above itself is "ma'am, I ordered 2 packs of yellow rice"
Hi siti, i think you missunderstood wiyh my application. I suggest uou to read more article to understand about this.
Hapusoh sorry, if i didn't correctly answer your blog .. right i want to add an example. but I misinterpreted ... thanks for helping me
HapusHello Vero, I give you many questions, and help you answer the questions. I almost forget to give you a praise. Your blog is so good, and you give many opinions from the experts also. So, it is good for you to make a conclusion and it is also good for us to understand about your topic. Thank you.

HapusOk sist. Thank you fornur suggestion
HapusHi siti, do u have another suggestion for me? Not only just say agree with others?
HapusYou are a great joker Vero. But, it is the Siti's right for not giving any suggestion and just agreeing with someone's opinion. Maybe you should ask Siti directly on WhatsApp to give you a suggestion on your blog.
HapusHahahahah.. Yah, I mean better she give some sugeestion or question, rather than just said yes and i agree lol. Is it righ, siti?
Hapusyess, I have suggestion to you..
HapusYour blog is good, solid and clear, but just like me it's too dense.
I want to change it and I hope you do too ..
and always include a link on your blog,,,

BalasHapusI have already commented your blog about Speech Act Theories by Searle. I think you should move faster. replying comments from us in a short time. so, we don't need to waiting for long time. thank you.
HapusYes, of course sikin, but i need need to take rest as well sikin, not only waiting your comment in my blog, because i also have anothing thing to do.
Hapushi vero 👋 I'm Lia silveria sinaga 😊 nice to meet you in here 😊 i have seen your explanation, this is it's so simple and not interesting 😑😑 sorry vero 🙏 but I'm seriously 😑😑 it makes me lazy to read it 😑 😑
BalasHapushello vero 👋😊 I'm coming back, I hope you don't get bored seeing my comments 😊😊 here I want to ask you 😊😊 what is the purpose in learning your topics? thank you vero 😇 and don't forget to come to my blog okay 😊 give me a comment and suggest to my blog 😊 I'll wait for you 🙏 have a nice day vero 😇
HapusHi Lia. There are many motions on your comment. Is it for making the lines of the comment longer? Hahah. I really want to know what is your opinion about this topic? Can you explain to us about the topic according to your understanding? Thank you.
Hapushai kak sikin,,, can I answer your question about the purpose of this topic ,, I think that this topic is about a pragmatics sentence. In the this blog we can conclude that, pragmatics not only study about the language, but also about hidden meaning of the speaker what the speaker want to say to listener while dealing with different situation to motivate the listener to do something for a purpose. and kak vero also include an example to make it easier to understand the meaning of pragmatics and draw conclusions from Mr. Budi's lessons, I think that's my answer, thank you.
HapusHi Lia, thank you for your critic in my blog. And i want to ask, which part of my my that you said does not interesting, it maybe because you do not understand what i want deliver to you.
HapusHi Lia, i will explain again what this topic talk about. Pragmatics is the study of language, and also meaning, and the context in the word or sentences from speaker to motivate the listener to do something. Same thing with semantics, only the difference is that pragmatics uses logic more and bit straight, while semantics uses finer words and more using heart.
HapusHi Siti, where thank you for yoir answer, and dont forget, the most important think, purpose we study this topic is to understand about this lesson, and also to get good score. Hahahahhaha. Lol 😎😎
Hapusyah yeah kak Vero ... I know that ... I hope this blog helps me well.
HapusLia, I have been waiting for you for a long time. You are so late for answering all of my questions. I am very dissappointed. 😞😖😴
BalasHapusYes Lia, and I think you need to read once more so u can understand what the topic talk about.
HapusHi Lia? Where did you gone? Do you still alive? Even you dont have time to reply once?
HapusHi sikin, do you think uou really understand about my topic? I think you are not. So, no need pretend like you understand about everything in this life.
HapusDon't waste your time and mine. I really hope to see the answer from you as soon as possible. I am very wondering your question. I can not stand this. 😕
BalasHapusHi sikin. Why are you always here? You dont want to do something else? Rather than you just standby here? Time is precious sikin, dont waste your time. 😂
HapusLet me know about your conclusion of this topic. We can share information here. I really hope you can be more active after this. ✅✅✅
BalasHapusHi sikin, i will answer your question to Lia, in conclusion Pragmatics is the study of language, and also meaning, and the context in the word or sentences from speaker to motivate the listener to do something. Same thing with semantics, only the difference is that pragmatics uses logic more and bit straight, while semantics uses finer words and more using heart.
HapusWow, when did you like pink ??? the theme of your blog this time is really cute, but not with the person
BalasHapusHi niki, dont try to be an assholez like you always wanna be.. 😏😏. I like pink or whatever. That not your bussiness niki. But. Thank you for say this is cute.
Hapusow, from many of the same topics. can you explain in detail with me the understanding of pragmatics according to your own ???
BalasHapusHai niki, Pragmatics is the study of language, and also meaning, and the context in the word or sentences from speaker to motivate the listener to do something. Same thing with semantics, only the difference is that pragmatics uses logic more and bit straight, while semantics uses finer words and more using heart.
HapusHi niki, where did you gone? Why are you so busy? I know you are not busy at all.
Hapus
